Description
"Antico e Moderno" is an overture for wind band from probably 1896, written by the Italian composer Giuseppe Manente. Born in Morcone in 1867, the composer received his first musical training at the local Sorrento association, where his father was also the conductor. He later studied composition and harmony with Camillo de Nardis and trumpet with Domenico Gatti. His musical journey then brought him to the Royal Italian Army "Regio Esercito Italiano" where he had an important military career during World War I. He wrote more than 800 works for concert band and fanfare band, the latter of which is certainly unique for an Italian composer (Fanfares are, in fact, mainly from Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands). All genres were covered by Manente including marches, overtures, processional marches, character pieces, mazurkas, waltzes, as well as all kinds of different arrangements.

"Antico e Moderno" is certainly a composition from his formative years and it is assumed that the piece was written in the last years of his studies with Maestro de Nardis (around 1897). The original ensemble of the composition is that of the small Vessellian band:Quartino in Mib (clarinet in E-flat)
Clarinetti in Sib 1/2 (clarinet in B-flat)
Cornette (cornet)
Flicorni soprani (flugelhorn)
Corni in Mib (horn)
Flicorni Bassi in Sib (basstrumpet)
Tromboni 1/2/3 e Trombone di canto (solo, 1st, 2nd, 3rd trombone)
Bombardini (baritone/euphonium)
Bassi (bass/tuba)
Batteria (percussion)
The modernization and revision work of this piece was performed for the concert held on September 25, 2019 at the "Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi" in Milan, a performance by the "Civica orchestra a fiati Giuseppe Verdi, città di Trieste" conducted by the arranger and also conductor Matteo Firmi. This work included a major modification of the original instrumentation. The work performed included a reconstruction of the pages that were virtually illegible, in which assumptions were made by me as an arranger. Then I revisited and analyzed certain harmonic aspects that were unclear and certainly could not always be completely correct. Then I re-instrumented the work on the basis of today's modern wind band, with all the instruments present in it. I tried to stick as much as possible to the composer's original version, but could not avoid some modifications. The end result, however, is a gem of a classical work and a welcome addition to the world of wind music of a hitherto unknown work by this Italian Giuseppe Manente.

The work was masterfully recorded by Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy in October 2021 under the direction of Major Arjan Tien.

The work is dedicated to Professor Santo Salvatore Distefano for his great passion and attention to the organ and the history of Italian wind music.

I am also very grateful to René Mulders and Leen Robbemont for their help.
