APPLE HYMN

A piece comprising two contrasting themes structured in A-B-A format. The fi rst theme is fanfare-style and characterised strongly by the fourth intervals present in the melody. These are then re-employed for the harmonization of the theme during the repeat and accompanied by rhythmic obstinate from the percussion and bass sections. The second theme is more lyrical and characterised by the same intervals of the horn in measure #8. This central movement is very short and contrasts sharply with the rest of the piece as the rhythmic obstinate gives way to the more lyrical fl ute and oboe. The repeat returns to the initial theme and sees the woodwinds and brass section alternating. The same theme is then played once more in its entirety in a different tonality, up a perfect fourth the main key and harmonized by primarily employing chords constructed with fourths. A strong fi nal closing by tutti reiterates the majestic splendour of the piece. The title pays homage to the apple and the Val di Non area in the Trentino region which is both a renowned production area for this fruit as well as being the birthplace of the composer.
