Description
The title
This short suite is inspired by the famous story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The language is deliberately archaic, to reflect the atmosphere of the medieval fairytale. The work consists of three movements that flow on without interruption. The first, a sort of stately march, presents King Arthur. The second is a saraband, a stately old dance in triple time that was performed at court, dedicated to Genevieve. The third movement is a gig, another old dance, this time from Ireland. With its circular and whirling motion and melancholy melody, it represents the knight of all knights, the heroic but unlucky Sir Lancelot.
