Roberto Villata
Roberto Villata was born in Turin in 1954 and started to study trumpet from an early age. He later went on to specialise at the Conservatory of Music in Turin under the guidance of Maestro Arfinengo for three years before dedicating himself to technical studies.
Together with friend and fellow musician Gioachino Scomegna, he founded the Scomegna music publishing company in 1974. Although initially deciding to issue didactic texts for conservatories, the two young publishers soon cast their attention to band music, which was still not enjoying the development and growth in Italy that it was enjoying at the time in the rest of Europe.
Villata has remained alone at the helm of the company since 1978. Distribution activities on behalf of the leading foreign publishing houses and the production of numerous works by young upcoming Italian composers led Scomegna to quickly become the foremost publisher of band music in Italy with a catalogue of more than 1.500 titles. The company has also been actively involved abroad since the 1990’s, and enjoyed considerable success.
Apart from his main publishing interests, Roberto Villata occasionally composes musical works, as well as starting to play the tuba with a concert band in recent years.
