The term feuerfest literally means fireproof. The Feuerfest! polka was commissioned in 1869 to celebrate the 20,000th fireproof safe produced by the Wertheim company. The score involves a percussionist hitting an anvil with a hammer, recalling the construction and solidity of the safe.
