FAIR PLAY
Mandatory piece in third category at the Flicorno d'Oro 2025 competition, this is a ternary form fantasia based on the Bolognese song "La fira ed San Lazer." The fast sections alternate between the original melody and rhythmic variations; the adagio presents melodic, rhythmic, and timbral variations on a slow theme.
Description
"Fair Play" is a lively fantasia on the Bolognese folk song "La fira ed San Lazer," in a ternary form: Allegro - Adagio - Allegro. A well-known "goliardic" version of this piece was created by Francesco Guccini, with a live version included in his 1973 album "Opera Buffa." In the two fast movements, there is an alternation between the original melody and other rhythmic and melodic materials elaborated from the melody itself. The Adagio, on the other hand, is constructed as a series of variations—melodic, rhythmic, and even timbral—on a slow theme derived from the song's melody.
