CONCERTO FOR TROMBONE
Trombone solo: grade 5. The piece is an exploration of timbre and expression. The solo trombone introduces the main themes, developing various thematic cells. The wind orchestra moves on different planes, from accompanying the soloist to rhythmic contrast with the thematic material.
Description
This concerto is intended to be a study in timbre and expressivity. The trombone introduces the main thematic elements and develops the motivic cells that characterize the composition. Within this development, the solo instrument also alternates between moments of pure lyricism and rhythmic drive, or mostly free and cadential sections. The wind orchestra plays different roles: it accompanies the solo instrument, it provides a rhythmic contrast to the thematic component, and it expands the structural organization. The musical idiom, not always immediately comprehensible, emphasizes the development of the main thematic cells. It is characterized by an evident formal freedom, which progressively shifts the initial midair and rarefied atmosphere towards backgrounds that are expressively more tense and restless.
