The Eagles of the Steppe is a fascinating novel by Emilio Salgari, published in 1905 and set in the vast steppes between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan around 1875. A distinctive feature of the work is the central role given to the steppe, which becomes the true protagonist of the story. In the final part, the environment itself tests the characters, forcing them to face extreme difficulties such as a lack of water and food, oppressive heat, and encounters with fierce wild animals.
The novel explores two main themes: on one hand, the conflicts, kidnappings, manhunts, and chases involving the raiders known as The Eagles of the Steppe; on the other, the rivalry between two men vying for the love of the same woman.
Inspired by this work, Luciano Feliciani composed music that evokes the boundless landscapes of Central Asia and the dramatic action of the band of raiders. The first part of the piece is descriptive and lively, featuring scales and intervals that resemble the typical melodies of the region. In the central section, slower and more melancholic, the love theme of Hossein for Talmà, his fiancée kidnapped by the Eagles during their wedding on the orders of the antagonist Abei, emerges. The composition concludes with a return of the Eagles' theme, followed by a powerful finale that celebrates Hossein's victory, finally free to marry Talmà.
