The piece tells the story of the coral fishermen of Ponza, who in springtime left their island to reach the Sardinian coasts between Alghero and Santa Teresa di Gallura. There, they devoted themselves to coral fishing for several months, before returning to Ponza in autumn.
The work opens with Theme B, introspective in character, representing the departure from the island. Theme A then depicts the adventures and hardships faced by these men, between the open sea and the demanding daily work.
