Description
The Toy Symphony is a work that combines traditional symphonic music with the playful effects of unconventional instruments, such as cuckoos, ratchets, and drums. Composed in the 18th century, it is best known today in its three-movement version: Allegro, Minuet, and Finale. This is the most frequently performed concert version and the one that best captures the light and brilliant essence of the piece. Originally, however, the work also circulated in a more extended version consisting of seven movements.

This transcription for wind band offers the possibility of intertwining narration and music, creating a suggestive moment in which the story of toys coming to life develops between movements. The brief narrations accompanying the musical parts allow the audience to experience a true fairy tale of magic and fantasy, where sounds become the means to animate an enchanted world of toys and adventures.

Traditionally attributed to Leopold Mozart or Franz Joseph Haydn, the authorship of the Toy Symphony has been subject to historical revisions. More recent studies point to Edmund Angerer (1740–1794) as the most likely author—an Austrian composer capable of creatively combining orchestral writing with the use of toy instruments, giving the work a unique and fascinating character.
