Description
The piece was commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Nuova Banda Comunale of San Giorgio di Nogaro (UD). It is a work that, through its contrasting elements, showcases the timbral potential of the wind band ensemble while remaining at a moderate level of difficulty. After visiting the town, the composer wrote six short movements, each representing one of the districts/hamlets that make up this Friulian municipality:
1. Nogaro: this first movement opens with a march that introduces the work as a sort of festive, solemn parade;
2. Villanova: this district is portrayed through a languid and elegant waltz, with the thematic material mainly entrusted to the woodwinds;
3. Zuccola: with its dark medieval echoes, this movement takes a step back in time through rhythmic textures from the lower instruments and percussion, with overlapping themes creating a mysterious atmosphere;
4. Galli: a playful and spirited dance, characterized by changing meters, irregular rhythms, and a distribution of themes among various instrumental sections;
5. Chiarisacco: an expressive and melancholic andante, in the distinctive style of the Sardinian composer;
6. Zellina: the composition ends light-heartedly and joyfully with an “Allegro grazioso”, which fittingly includes a quote from “Happy Birthday”.
