Description
1st Prize Category A of the 33rd Edition of the International Competition for Original Band Composition - Corciano (PG)
A Concert for Symphonic Band is a piece composed during the winter of 2024–2025, written for a large symphonic band. Its tripartite structure follows a deeply human emotional narrative: the fight against cancer. Each movement represents a crucial stage of this journey, from the initial impact to ultimate recovery.
The first movement, titled Bruttissime notizie, confronts us with the devastating moment of diagnosis. The music explores confusion and a shift in life perspective through a strictly atonal language. It is based on a twelve-tone row, whose hexachordal and tetrachordal combinations are used as structural material. A generative motif, presented at the beginning, reappears in various forms, serving as the expressive axis of the entire movement.
The second movement, Con Sentimento Religioso, represents a moment of contemplation and prayer, where the individual turns to God or fate in hope of comfort or healing. It is conceived within tonal centrality, offering an emotional and harmonic contrast to the previous movement. Its introspective character makes it the spiritual heart of the piece.
The third movement, Battaglia e Vittoria Finale, embodies resilience: the determination to face illness with energy and a desire to live. Tonal and atonal elements alternate in an expressive dialogue reflecting the complexity of the process. The piece culminates in a grand final chorale, symbolizing hope and triumph.
This work is intended as a tribute to those who give everything to overcome illness and to those who accompany them on that path.
