Description
Festa popolare (Village Festival) is the fourth and final movement of the Suite siciliana, the celebrated orchestral work composed in 1907 by the Palermo-born composer and conductor Gino Marinuzzi.
The complete suite was first performed in Palermo in 1909 under the composer's own direction and published by Casa Ricordi in 1910.
Suite siciliana reflects the early twentieth-century trend of rediscovering national musical roots through the orchestral elaboration of themes inspired by folk traditions. It consists of four movements, each portraying scenes and atmospheres of Sicilian life:
1. Christmas Legend
2. The Emigrant's Song
3. Country Waltz
4. Village Festival
As the concluding movement of the suite, Festa popolare stands out for its rhythmic vitality and brilliant orchestral writing. The music evokes the sounds, colours, and vibrant atmosphere of Sicilian street festivals, creating an exuberant and engaging musical celebration.
