It is an unpublished score by Giuseppe Verdi, whose manuscript was given to the director Luchino Visconti. Nino Rota, to whom Visconti had entrusted the creation of the soundtrack of the film Il Gattopardo, adapted the piece so that it could be performed by a small ensemble and recorded it in Palermo in a relatively hasty way to present an audition to the director. However, the latter decided not to modify the recording because in the final scene of the dance the orchestra plays live in a private house and an imperfect performance was more realistic.
