Angelo Sormani

Angelo Sormani (1965-2022) graduated in trumpet, electronic and experimental music composition, choral singing, choir direction and band instrumentation from the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory in Milan. He later gained a level 2 masters degree from the same conservatory in band direction, composition and instrumentation. He attended courses specialising in band analysis, composition and instrumentation at the ‘Istituto Superiore Bandistico Europeo’ in Trento, Italy. Whilst studying music, he also graduated in Computer Science from the University of Milan. Sormani taught ‘Technology and Physics Studies’ at the I.P.S.I.A. “L.Ripamonti” professional institute in Como, ‘Theory, Solfeggio and Harmony’ at the Lugano Civic Philharmonic Orchestra School of Music and ‘Band Direction and Instrumentation’ at the European Academy of Music in Erba. Angelo Sormani was the conductor of several bands, including the “A. Manzoni” civic band of Lecco, and the “Città di Mariano Comense” and “Santa Cecilia” civic bands of Costa Masnaga. He also directed the Lugano Junior Band from 2002 to 2008. He worked as director and composer with the Umbria Concert Band Festival, ANBIMA, the International Military Band Festival in Modena and the “G. Verdi” Conservatory Wind Orchestra of Milan.

He has also won significant awards for his compositions in international competitions, including: “L. Russolo” in Varese; “Città di Pavia”; “V. Bucchi” in Rome; the Corciano Original Composition for Bands Competition (awards from three separate editions); “Pietro Pernice” in Syracuse (awards from two separate editions); “Pellegrino Caso” in Vietri Sul Mare; “La prime Lus” in Bertiolo, ANBIMA in Udine, and “Romualdo Marenco” in Novi Ligure (awards from two separate editions).

His compositions have been selected as compulsory pieces for band contests both in Italy and France and Angelo Sormani has been frequently invited as guest conductor or tutor for concert band courses and trainings.
