CENTE
Cente, commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the refoundation of the Banda Musicale di Reana del Rojale, draws inspiration from the history, landscape, and identity of the local community. Through three contrasting sections, the work evokes the surrounding scenery, reimagines a traditional folk melody, and celebrates the perseverance and sense of belonging that define the village.
Description
Cente is a Friulian word meaning enclosure, fortification, or embankment. It recalls the remains of an ancient settlement in the centre of Reana del Rojale which, as noted by Tarcisio Venuti, bear witness to the existence of a local community dating back many centuries.
Yet Cente also conveys the idea of a circle, a community, an embrace: a group of people united by a shared passion, much like the members of a wind band association. For the inhabitants of Reana, the cente (Italianized as centa) represent the heart of village life, a symbol of social gathering and collective identity, from which the traditional Sagra dell’Assunta also takes inspiration.
Over the past fifty years, the concept of Cente has likewise reflected the journey of the Banda Musicale di Reana del Rojale, whose activities have been hosted in various locations throughout the village, from the parish church, where the first rehearsals took place, to the former dairy building that now serves as the band’s headquarters.
Commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the refoundation of the Banda Musicale di Reana del Rojale, the composition unfolds in three main sections. The introduction presents an idyllic theme, evoking an imaginary journey along the village waterways and through the beautiful natural landscape surrounding Reana. The central section reinterprets an ancient folk lullaby in a contemporary style, while the final section, more energetic and driven, is inspired by the events, challenges, and stories that have shaped the community over the decades.
These places speak of perseverance, passion, and a strong sense of belonging. These values find their culmination in the solemn final reprise, built upon a reworking of a fragment of the opening theme and symbolizing the continuity between memory, tradition, and the future.
