MONTEPONI

MONTEPONI

The piece follows the classical form A (Allegro) – B (Andante) – A (Allegro). The Allegro is marked by rich rhythmic treatment and various metric changes. The central section contrasts sharply in both character and tempo with the previous one, though it clearly shares some thematic material.

Description
Monteponi is a hamlet in the municipality of Iglesias, in southern Sardinia, where, in the mid-1800s, a large mining complex was established thanks to a concession from the Kingdom of Savoy. The music band of Iglesias was founded in 1875 as the Municipal Town Band and continued its activity until 1914, when the ensemble was disbanded due to the municipality’s financial problems and the fact that the musicians had to lay down their instruments and leave for the front. After the war, in 1919, the G. Verdi Circle was founded and immediately absorbed the band. From then on, the ensemble took the name Banda Verdi and was supported and financed by the Monteponi miners’ society, which also committed to hosting its activities within its own facilities.
The piece follows the classical form A (Allegro) – B (Andante) – A (Allegro). The Allegro is marked by rich rhythmic treatment and various metric changes. The central section contrasts sharply in both character and tempo with the previous one, though it clearly shares some thematic material.
The return of the Allegro brings back the original musical elements.
