Beschreibung
The title
Inspired by William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name, Charles Gounod's opera, "Roméo et Juliette", was first performed at the "Théâtre Lyrique" in Paris on 27 April 1867. It was the only opera by the French composer to immediately be hailed as a great success by critics and the public alike. More than a century later, "Roméo et Juliette" is still revered as an absolute masterpiece. The Valse, "Je veux vivre", in the central part of the first act, combines the virtuoso and melancholy styles and is a favourite with sopranos of agility from all over the world.
