ATLAS
Trombone solo: grade 6. Inspired by the myth of Atlas and the Farnese Atlas, Luciano Feliciani’s Atlas is a concerto for solo Trombone and Wind Orchestra. In three movements it portrays the weight of the heavens, a dialogue with the stars, and the Titanomachy, blending power, lyricism and driving rhythms.
Description
There is an ancient image that has crossed the centuries with the power of a symbol: Atlas, the Titan condemned to hold up the vault of heaven on his shoulders for eternity. He is not merely a myth, but a universal figure: the emblem of one who bears an immense burden, of one who endures, of one who contemplates the sky while remaining bound to the earth.
Inspired by this legend – and by the extraordinary suggestion of the Farnese Atlas, the famous sculpture depicting the celestial sphere engraved with constellations – Luciano Feliciani composed Atlas, a concerto for solo Trombone and Wind Orchestra. Here the trombone becomes the Titan’s voice and body: dark and powerful, lyrical and reflective, capable of turning into sound the weight of fatigue, the silence of the stars, and the roar of battle.
In the first movement, The Weight of the World, the music seems to rise from a deep shadow: solemn, weighty chords evoke the burden of the heavens and the strength required to sustain it.
The second, Dialogue with the Stars, opens a suspended and luminous space, like a still night: the soloist sings an intimate dialogue with the constellations, poised between contemplation and longing.
The finale, Titanomachia, bursts forth in a fierce whirlwind: driving rhythms, overwhelming energy, and constant exchanges between soloist and orchestra bring to life the mythical clash between Titans and Gods.
Atlas thus becomes a musical journey between legend and destiny, where the power of the ancient tale is transformed into sonic emotion: the weight of the world, the voice of the stars, the fire of battle.
