Polka for Solo Xylophone and Concert Band
Description
Domenico Gatti (Palermo 1816 - San Giorgio a Cremano 1891) was a bandmaster in the Bourbon army and a teacher of Trumpet, Trombone, and related instruments at the "Regio Collegio di Musica" in Naples when Saverio Mercadante was the director. He authored a "grand progressive theoretical and practical method for trumpet and valve cornet in B-flat," still used in Italian conservatories today.
Among his many compositions for band, Gatti wrote a beautiful Polka Brillante, a short piece with variations for "Quartino" (E-flat Clarinet) or "Ottavino" (Piccolo), titled "La Rondinella." Maestro Renato Soglia, the current editor of Domenico Gatti's educational works for Trumpet and Trombone at Edizioni Ricordi, expanded the original melody of "La Rondinella" by adding thematic ideas derived from its melodic-rhythmic cells, transforming it into a lively and sparkling solo for xylophone and band.
